Q:Why do girls have to have vaginal discharge?! I HATE it. I was always confused what it was until I read up about it and apparently wearing pantiliners is a good idea to protect your underwear from getting messed up, but it's still annoying. And I can't imagine how awkward it would be in the future with my husband? Some guys don't know that much about the female body and they might get freaked out/disgusted by it. How much of a turn off would it be to take off your wife's undies and find that?

as salaam alaikum,

Vaginal discharge is just a fact of life. The vagina and uterus are mucous membranes and, therefore, constantly make mucous.

It’s better to think of it like snot, a kind of mucous that every human always has present. Noses always have mucus in them, and that’s a good thing. Without mucus, the nose wouldn’t be moist and we’d get sick a lot more frequently than we currently do because the primary job of mucus is to trap germs, like colds and bronchitis.

The same is true for vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge protects female reproductive organs from diseases. It is also involved in helping women get pregnant. Without vaginal discharge women would get infected from merely using the bathroom, submerging herself in standing water, and having sex.

As humans we need to stop using the male condition as the “normal” for everyone. This is also true for Muslims. It is not normal for a man to have discharge from his penis, but it is normal for a woman to have discharge from her vagina. And while it might seem gross to you, I can guarantee you that as long as it’s not abnormal vaginal discharge (e.g. discharge that smells bad because of a yeast infection), husbands don’t mind it. Some even find it attractive.

In short, there is nothing wrong with vaginal discharge, without it women would get sick, and unless there’s an infection in your vagina it’s not going to gross out your future husband inshallah.
