Q:salam, um if i have a period does that mean i'm not pregnant?
wa alaikum us salaam,
Not necessarily. It is possible to experience something that looks very similar to a period while pregnant.*
One of my friends had her “period” for the first six months of her pregnancy. She never lost enough blood for it to be a risk to her unborn child (and her doctor kept a very close eye on her), but if she hadn’t used a pregnancy test, she might not have known.
In the time of the Prophet saaws, they used the presence of three consecutive periods after divorce in order to establish that the woman was not pregnant. This is not a fool-proof method but it’s all they had back then, and it works in over 95% of the cases.
Anyway, my point is if this particular period is significantly abnormal, such as lighter flow, absence of blood clots, lighter color, or you only had what most women refer to as “spotting”, you should use an at-home pregnancy test to make sure that you’re not pregnant.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask. May Allah give you what is best for you in the duniya and the akhira. Ameen.
*Note: It’s medically impossible to have a period while pregnant but women CAN experience something that looks exactly like a period. So the point is a minor distinction. I once had my “period” for 19 days straight when I was really stressed out, but it wasn’t a period for the entire 19 days. It was probably 6-10 days of period and the rest were abnormal bleeding. Allahu alem.
